Building A New Home

What To Know When Building A New Home

If you have decided that building your next home is the best option for you and your family, then you have made a great decision. However, there are a number of things that most people forget in their excitement. This article will cover some of the very important considerations and the options you have when building a new home.

Which rooms are your preferred areas – know which rooms you will be using the most often, and orientate your home around them. If you work from home, then you may want to have your office located in a primary location, with the best view. Likewise, if you enjoy entertaining friends, then make sure your kitchen and dining room are located in the best possible place. Once you have designed where the primary rooms will be, you can organise the rest of your home around these areas.

Garden options – if you and your family enjoy spending time in the garden, then consider in which direction it will face. Based on where you live, you will want to orientate it for the best sunlight during the peak hours of the day. This will make a huge difference in how you spend your time during the summer months (having barbecues, giving parties and spending time relaxing outdoors).

Areas of the home – if you have a family, then you may want to design the home so that certain areas are quiet, while others lend themselves toward more social activities. This is especially important in placing where the bedrooms will be situated. If you have small children, then you may want your bedroom to be close to theirs, while teenagers will want more privacy. Thinking about these issues early on in the planning will really lead to more enjoyment of your new home.

Garage options – as building a double garage is only marginally more expensive (in terms of extra building materials) than a single one, if you have the space, then this is a recommended addition. Even if you only have one car, it will make your home easier to sell in the future if you have garaging for two cars.

Electricity sockets – one simple thing to add to all rooms is to use 4-plug sockets instead of the usual 2-plug variations. This is overlooked most of the time, but it can make a huge difference in terms of simplicity. For example, think about how after plugging in a TV and a lamp in your bedroom you have no more outlets. It is best to have more sockets as they will always be useful, and it will prevent constantly taking out plugs. For homes with teenage children who have lots of electronic gadgets, the more power sockets the better.

Storage – when designing your home, ensure that there is plenty of room for storage. While everyone remembers the most common rooms of the house during the planning stage, storage space is often overlooked. Yet this can have a big impact on how the home is used. Again if you have children then you will want to have plenty of storage space even if you have to battle with them to use it. These days, you can have discreet areas of storage which are hidden from view, as well as making it as organised as possible.

Think about the future – most people don’t think about future changes that they may need to make to their new home (if, for example, they have a family). One of these options is to run conduit under your driveway in case there is a need to make changes to the house wiring or plumbing installations at a future date. It is a very small cost compared to digging up your drive in a couple of years.
